Monica was a teacher by profession and she got hit when trying to stop a fight between two school boys. She passed out while recovering at home. In the hospital it turned out she had suffered an subdural hematoma and she had to have brain surgery. In time of recovery her marriage took a turn for the worse but she and Kayce Dutton overcame their problems and eventually started to live on his home ranch.

He was found missing when he was feeding his horse at night, it was also another incident that was very hard to stand with for Monica yet she tired not to lose hope.
